Electroconvulsive therapy and its validity
I'm curious as to whether anyone here knows much about ECT and concerns someone might want to think about when considering it as an option.

It works.
It has robust long-term positive effects on depression even after treatment ceases. It also causes partial amnesia (but usually not severe), both for the time surrounding sessions and random past memories. It also takes a lot more time and trouble than pill popping.

Well the relevant question for any treatment should be:
Have multiple clinical studies using a control group which received a double-blind placebo shown a statistically significant increase in recovery or quality of life?

"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Actually, that would be very straightforward. You just sedate the person, put them in a hospital bed, and then let them go after they wake up.RiotGearEpsilon wrote:What the hell does a placebo version of ECT look like?
That said, any unnecessary treatment with strong sedatives is unethical, and therefore that placebo therapy would unethical. A safer comparison is outcomes vs. pills, 'talk therapy', acupuncture, combination therapies, & untreated patients. While the second option isn't as scientific, it's what should really matter to a person considering the therapy.
